Acid reflux and a pillow for positional therapy as an immediate solution for acid reflux
Acid reflux pillow: A wedge shaped pillow can comfortably raise the upper torso to help keep acid reflux down.
If you are like most of us, you enjoy sleeping in a horizontal position. For those who suffer with acid reflux a pillow can create a problem. The horizontal position of the torso can allow acid to reflux up into the esophagus. By raising the torso into a slightly vertical position, gravity will help keep acid from refluxing. This is what is known as positional therapy. Positional therapy is one of the easiest acid reflux treatments to implement. It can be done by simply elevating the head and torso when in a sleeping position by the use of pillows. To inhibit acid reflux pillows can be positioned to raise the torso approximately 6 to 8 inches. The added height should create enough vertical position that gravity will aid in keeping the acid down.
On a side note: Some acid reflux sufferers have found it uncomfortable to lay on the extra pillows. In such cases, positional therapy can still be achieved. You can simply elevate the head of the bed. By placing small blocks of wood, bricks or cement blocks under the upper legs of a bed, a patient can achieve the slightly vertical position required to keep the acid reflux down without the use of additional pillows.
